Mineral sunscreen and skin prone to blocked pores: what the chemistry suggests

The short answer

Whether a product blocks pores depends on its oils, waxes, film formers and how occlusive the finished film is, not on whether its filter is a metal oxide or a dissolved molecule. Metal oxide formulations tend to be heavier because a high filter loading requires structure and emollient, which is an argument that runs against them rather than for them. The comedogenicity ratings that circulate for individual ingredients come from methods with real limitations and do not transfer reliably to finished products. Skin that breaks out persistently is a clinical matter and belongs with a pharmacist or a GP rather than an ingredient list.

This question arrives constantly and is almost always answered by filter class, which is the one variable that has least to do with it.

What the word means

A comedo is a blocked follicle. Comedogenicity is the tendency of a substance or product to produce them. The concept is real, and the way it is measured is where the difficulty starts.

The ratings that circulate for individual ingredients derive largely from assays in which materials were applied, often neat or at high concentration, to a test site, and the resulting follicular changes assessed. Those methods established relative tendencies for raw materials under conditions that do not resemble use: an oil applied undiluted for weeks is not the same as the same oil at a few per cent in a formula that also contains materials which change how it behaves.

The consequence is that ingredient level ratings do not transfer reliably to finished products. A formulation containing an ingredient with a poor rating may be entirely unproblematic, and a formulation of materials with good ratings may not be. Testing on finished products, in the population of interest, is the meaningful assessment.

The argument that runs the other way

A metal oxide filter has a modest absorbance per unit mass, so a high labelled factor requires a high loading of solid particles. That loading has to be suspended, which means a structured continuous phase, and the powder absorbs oil onto its surface, which means more emollient than the sensory target would suggest. The result is generally a heavier, more occlusive film than an equivalent formulation using dissolved filters.

That is set out in why mineral formulations are hard to make elegant, and it is an argument against the claim rather than for it. It is also a general tendency rather than a rule: fluid, lightly loaded mineral formulations exist and are much lighter than some heavily emollient organic filter creams.

The zinc oxide confusion

Zinc oxide has a reputation in this area that comes from elsewhere. It has been used in preparations for inflamed and broken skin for a very long time, and topical zinc compounds have been studied in relation to acne. Those are different materials, different concentrations and different purposes from a coated cosmetic grade zinc oxide functioning as a filter in a sunscreen film.

Inferring an effect on acne from the presence of zinc oxide in a sunscreen is the same category of error as inferring sun protection from carotenoids in the diet: a real body of work about one thing has been transferred to another thing that shares a name. Acne treatment is a clinical matter with established options, and it belongs with a pharmacist, a GP or a dermatologist.

Where this stops and a clinician starts

Persistent acne, acne that is scarring, or skin that reacts badly to everything you try, is a matter for a pharmacist, your GP or a dermatologist rather than an ingredient list. There are effective treatments, several of them increase sensitivity to sunlight, and the interaction between a treatment and sun protection is exactly the sort of thing to ask a clinician about. The interaction that matters more than any of this

Several treatments used for acne and for photoageing increase the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet. That makes sun protection more important during treatment, not less, and it is one of the situations in which a clinician will actively advise on it.

It also means the tolerability question changes: skin undergoing treatment may be dry, peeling or inflamed, and the assessments of dermal penetration for metal oxide filters are explicit that they concern healthy, intact skin. That is a data gap rather than a finding of harm, and it is another reason the question belongs with the person supervising the treatment.

Removal, which is where a high loading film gets awkward

A point rarely made in this discussion: a sunscreen designed to resist water and abrasion is, by design, difficult to remove. That is a virtue during the day and a complication at the end of it.

A high loading metal oxide film with water resistant film formers is more tenacious than a light lotion, and removing it thoroughly generally requires an oil based or surfactant based cleanse rather than water alone. Incomplete removal leaves a residue overnight on skin that is producing sebum, which is the situation people are trying to avoid when they ask about blocked pores in the first place.

So the sequence that matters may not be which filter is in the tube but whether the film comes off properly at the end of the day. That is a cleansing question, it is individual, and it is another reason the answer is not found in the filter class.

What actually drives the outcome

  • Total occlusivity of the film. How much it seals the surface, which is a function of the oil phase and the film formers.
  • The oils and waxes chosen. Their behaviour in the formula rather than their behaviour neat.
  • Fragrance and other irritants. Irritation can worsen inflammatory skin conditions independently of follicular blockage.
  • Removal. A water resistant, high loading film is designed to resist removal, and how thoroughly it comes off at the end of the day is a real variable.
  • The individual. Follicular response varies enormously between people, which is why finished product testing in the relevant population is the only assessment that means much.

The summary

Nothing about a metal oxide filter makes a product less likely to block follicles, and the loading requirement makes the finished film heavier on average. The ingredient ratings widely quoted in this area come from methods that do not transfer to finished products. The reputation zinc oxide carries in this space comes from other uses of the material. And the underlying question, for anyone whose skin is persistently affected, is clinical rather than cosmetic.

A note on non comedogenic on a pack

The term is not defined in cosmetics law and there is no standard method a product must pass to use it. Some companies test finished products in relevant populations and some do not. Like any claim, it is subject to the general requirement that claims be capable of objective substantiation and not mislead, and like most claims in this category it is rarely accompanied by the method. It is a statement worth asking about rather than relying on.

Common questions

Does mineral sunscreen block pores less?

There is no reason from the chemistry to expect it to. Follicular behaviour depends on the oils, waxes, film formers and total occlusivity of the formulation, and the high loading a metal oxide filter needs generally produces a heavier film.

Are comedogenicity ratings reliable?

They derive largely from assays applying materials neat or at high concentration under conditions unlike normal use, and they do not transfer reliably to finished products. Testing of finished products in the relevant population is the meaningful assessment.

Does zinc oxide help acne?

I am on acne treatment. Does that change sun protection?

Several treatments increase sensitivity to sunlight, which makes sun protection more important during treatment. Ask the clinician supervising your treatment, since they can advise on both the sensitivity and what is suitable for skin that may be dry or inflamed.
