This one is different from the others, because the claim rarely arrives with a citation. It arrives with a tradition, and traditions are harder to argue with and easier to misread.
What the material is
Coconut oil is a fixed oil expressed from the kernel of Cocos nucifera. It is unusual among plant oils in being highly saturated, and unusual again in that its saturated fatty acids are mostly medium chain, with lauric acid dominating and myristic acid next. This is why it is solid at room temperature in a temperate climate and melts near body temperature.
Virgin and refined grades differ. Virgin oil retains more of the minor components, including polyphenols and a characteristic aroma; refined oil has been bleached and deodorised and is more consistent.
Why the chemistry is unpromising
Ultraviolet absorption in organic molecules comes overwhelmingly from electronic transitions in conjugated or aromatic systems. A saturated fatty acid chain has neither. It has a carboxyl group, which absorbs weakly at short wavelengths well below the range that reaches the ground, and a long alkane chain, which does essentially nothing optically in the ultraviolet A or B.
This is not a subtle point requiring measurement to settle. It follows from the structure. Whatever else coconut oil does, it is not a candidate ultraviolet absorber, and among the oils that carry this claim it has the weakest structural case.
Coconut oil has been used as sun protection for generations, so it works

- That the traditional practice was undertaken for ultraviolet protection rather than for another purpose.
- That the outcomes of the practice were observed in a way that would have distinguished protection from its absence.
- That the material has properties consistent with ultraviolet attenuation.

- Coconut oil has been applied to skin before and after sun exposure in many cultures, and is an effective emollient that reduces transepidermal water loss.
- It is a saturated, medium chain dominated fat with no structural features associated with strong ultraviolet absorbance.
- What is not established
- That the practice provided ultraviolet protection.
- That traditional use constitutes evidence of a protective effect. Ultraviolet damage is largely invisible in the short term and accumulates over decades, so the practice would feel the same whether or not it worked.
- That any determination of protection exists for the material.
Taking the tradition seriously
The traditional use argument deserves a proper answer rather than dismissal, because traditional practices frequently encode real knowledge.
What they encode reliably is knowledge with fast, visible feedback. A plant that eases an itch, a preparation that soothes a burn, a food that keeps: all of these produce a signal within hours or days, and a practice can be refined against it over generations.
Ultraviolet damage produces almost no usable signal. Sunburn appears many hours after the exposure that caused it, and it is caused mostly by ultraviolet B, so a practice could suppress the burn feedback while doing nothing for ultraviolet A. Photoageing takes decades. Skin cancer takes longer still. There is no plausible mechanism by which a tradition could have been selected for ultraviolet protection, because the information required to select for it was not available to the people practising it.
There is also a specific historical complication. Oiling skin before sun exposure has been widely practised in the deliberate pursuit of a tan, which is the opposite intention. A practice that appears in both contexts cannot be read as evidence for either.

What coconut oil actually does on skin
- Occlusion. It forms a semi occlusive film that slows transepidermal water loss, which is why it feels effective on dry skin.
- Emollience. It fills between corneocytes and smooths the surface, improving the feel and the light handling of the skin surface.
- Antimicrobial activity in vitro. Lauric acid and its monoglyceride have documented antimicrobial activity in laboratory conditions. What that means on intact skin is a separate question and not one to be answered from a laboratory result.
- Comedogenicity for some people. It is frequently reported as problematic on facial skin for people prone to blocked pores, which is individual and not something to generalise.
None of these is a filter function, and one of them, the smoothing of the skin surface, points in the wrong direction: reducing surface scattering by matching refractive index at the skin surface increases the proportion of incident light that enters the tissue, as discussed in plant oils presented as sun protection.
The after sun question
A more defensible version of the practice is applying an emollient after sun exposure, and it is worth distinguishing it clearly. Sun exposed skin is dehydrated and its barrier is disrupted. An emollient addresses that, and coconut oil is a competent emollient.
What it does not do is treat sunburn. Sunburn is an inflammatory injury, and the management of it, particularly if it is extensive, blistering, or affects a child, is a clinical matter. The NHS publishes guidance on sunburn and on when to seek help, and a pharmacist can advise on what is appropriate. Applying an oil to a burn is not obviously helpful and can trap heat in the immediate aftermath.
Sunburn that blisters, covers a large area, or is accompanied by feeling unwell, dizziness or a high temperature needs medical attention, and sunburn in a baby or young child should be discussed with a health professional. Follow the NHS guidance on sunburn rather than a home remedy.
The tanning oil lineage
There is a commercial history here that explains a great deal. Oils marketed for use in the sun were, for most of the twentieth century, tanning products. Their function was to make skin look glossy and even, to make it feel comfortable in heat, and in some formulations to accelerate the development of a tan. Protection was not the point and was frequently the opposite of the point.
Coconut oil sat in the middle of that tradition, both as a folk practice and as a commercial ingredient, and it carries the aroma associations to this day. When the same material reappears in a wellness context described as natural sun protection, it has changed its stated purpose without changing anything about its chemistry. The oil that was sold to help you tan is now sold to stop you burning, and nothing in the intervening period gave it a new property.
This matters because it identifies what the tradition actually was. It was not a protective practice that modern science has failed to appreciate. It was a comfort and cosmetic practice, in many cases attached to an explicit desire for sun exposure, and reframing it as protection is a recent marketing move rather than the recovery of old knowledge.
